Israel says its settlement expansion is to “prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state” as it announced 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian lawyer Diana Buttu says Israeli officials are daring the world to stop them.

Now, if the GHF’s Gaza debut is any indication, the militarised distribution of food will continue to provide opportunities for mass killing as crowds of starving Palestinians gather around aid hubs. The phrase “shooting fish in a barrel” comes to mind – as if the Gaza Strip weren’t enough of a barrel already.

To be sure, the idea of luring starving people to specific geographical points to facilitate Israel’s genocidal conquest is singularly diabolical. And as the US persists in enabling Israel’s fish-in-a-barrel approach, any remotely moral world would refuse to stomach the arrangement any longer.

Syria’s geopolitical importance cannot be underestimated, and its political alignment has shaped regional power dynamics for decades.

Aware of Syria’s strategic role as well as strength in resisting Western meddling and imperialistic goals, the US and its allies funded and trained hostile “opposition” groups, presenting themselves as defenders of freedom – their go-to slogan for pursuing imperialist agendas in the Arab country and beyond.

According to former US ambassador to Syria Robert S. Ford, the United States spent at least $12 billion on military and civilian efforts in Syria from 2014 to 2017 alone.

Importantly, the US and its allies did not just fund militant groups that carried out terrorist attacks in the country; they also imposed sanctions that devastated Syria’s economy, directly affecting the lives of ordinary and innocent civilians.

A UN report reveals that the economic crisis brought about by Western sanctions was one of the key drivers of poverty in Syria, pushing 82 percent of the population into extreme hardship.

No action was seen on the part of Jolani or his regime to challenge or resist this unlawful seizure of Syrian land, nor did he act when Israel bombed Syrian military sites that might have bolstered HTS’s military capabilities in the future.

Meanwhile, advocates of regime change and supporters of HTS claimed that a “free Syria” would lead to a “free Palestine.” Yet, the reality has turned out to be the exact opposite, and now the silence from these very proponents is so profound, it is almost palpable.

June 1st, we’ll attempt to, again, sail towards Gaza and to try to break the siege and open up a humanitarian corridor by delivering aid like food and medical supplies,” says Thunberg. A similar mission to sail to occupied Gaza in May was aborted after a flotilla dubbed the “Conscience” suffered two drone attacks while in international waters.

“Keep your eyes on deck, continue flooding the streets, organize, boycott, and do everything in your power to stand for Palestine,” Thunberg ends her message, readying to set sail for Gaza from Catania, Sicily, on Sunday with aid supplies and several high-profile activists alongside her.

"CATANIA, Italy (AP) — Climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and other 11 activists set sail on Sunday afternoon for Gaza on a ship aimed at “breaking Israel’s siege” of the devastated territory, organizers said.

The sailing boat Madleen – operated by activist group Freedom Flotilla Coalition — departed from the Sicilian port of Catania, in southern Italy.

It will try to reach the shores of the Gaza Strip in an effort to bring in some aid and raise “international awareness” over the ongoing humanitarian crisis, the activists said at a press conference on Sunday, ahead of departure. "

Nearly 230 killed or wounded as Israel carries out largest massacre since new aid mechanism was enforced in Gaza (Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, 2025-06-01)

>> Euro-Med Monitor’s field team documented Israeli forces opening fire on thousands of civilians gathered at dawn today, Sunday, 1 June 2025, in Tel al-Sultan, Rafah, near an aid distribution centre established by the Israeli army. Preliminary data indicate that the attack killed at least 31 civilians, including two women, and injured more than 200 others. Several remain missing.

>> The death toll is expected to rise due to the high number of critical injuries and the severe collapse of the healthcare system caused by the blockade and Israeli targeting of medical facilities.

A Palestinian father who had lost nine of his 10 children in an Israeli airstrike has died from wounds sustained in the same attack, local health officials have said.

Hamdi al-Najjar, 40, a doctor at Nasser hospital, was critically injured when Israeli forces bombed the family house in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis on 23 May, killing nine of his children. He had just returned home after accompanying his wife Alaa, a paediatrician at the Nasser medical complex, to work when the building was struck. He had initially survived alongside his son Adam, 11, who is still in hospital.

"Thousands of people headed toward the distribution site hours before dawn. As they approached the site, Israeli forces ordered them to disperse and come back later, witnesses said. When the crowds reached the Flag Roundabout, about 1km away, at about 3am, Israeli forces opened fire, the witnesses said."

Mohammed Abu Teaima, 33, said he saw Israeli forces open fire and kill his cousin and another woman as they were heading to the hub. He said his cousin was shot in his chest and died at the scene. Many others were wounded, including his brother-in-law, he said."

Sabbah coordinates the Sameer Project with two other Palestinians living in the diaspora - California-based Lena Dajani, who organises medical aid, and an anonymous activist who runs the Instagram page, ‘Translating Falasteen’.

The trio have raised millions of dollars and coordinated with people on the ground in Gaza to respond to requests for food, medicine and emergency aid via Whatsapp groups.

With a skeleton team and a strong web of contacts, the group is agile and flexible in their approach, able to adapt quickly to the daily flurry of requests.

While news reports and testimonies have emerged of the torture of Palestinian prisoners held in detention camps like Sde Teiman—where there are frequent beatings, starvation, forced stress positions, rape, and death—there has been less recognition that these conditions are prevalent across all Israeli prisons and detention centers. There are 19 carceral facilities in Israel, and Ofer Prison, which operates in the West Bank.

“The first thing [the Israeli Prison Services] began to do was to fully isolate detainees,” Jaghoub said. After October 7th, isolation of detainees was not limited to solitary confinement, but included cutting prisoners off from any communication with family, lawyers, or the outside world, including stripping them of radio, television, and access to phone calls.

“One of the worst things of the isolation practices was even cutting us off from time. The confiscation of watches meant we are completely and fully cut off from the world entirely—that we were denied any piece of information, even knowing what time it,” Jaghoub told Drop Site.

The isolation of detainees cut the world off from detainees, rendering them invisible and allowing Israel to continue its practices against them without challenge. Only when prisoners were released could they fully reveal the degree of abuse inside, though some did manage to communicate from their prison cells.

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, has cautioned against blaming only Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the destruction in Gaza.

“The problem will not be resolved by scapegoating him, ignoring the rest,” Albanese posted on social media.

She emphasised that Israel’s broader policies—ranging from occupation and annexation to apartheid and what she called acts of genocide—must be confronted and dismantled.

Albanese’s comments highlight growing criticism of efforts to reduce the crisis to one individual’s actions, without addressing the systemic violence driving the assault on Gaza.

"TEL AVIV — Barely noticeable only a few months ago, opposition is growing about fresh Israeli operations in Gaza even among the country’s military reservists, some of whom have publicly called out the government for what they say is an immoral and politically motivated decision to continue the war."
