Hello c/NSQ! As you may have noticed from the fancy “A” next to his name on his posts around Lemmy, our fearless leader AvaddonLFC is now an Administrator, which means he can no longer be part of our moderation team. I have agreed to take over his communities because I believe in what we’ve all been building together as a group. There will be no changes to the current rules or moderators, though you may see some new faces that were already chosen to join the team.

If you have any feedback on our rules or just want to tell us how much you’ll miss AvaddonLFC, this is the place to do it. (Don’t worry, I can take it!)

I am grateful to AvaddonnLFC for building this community and inviting me to join him as a moderator, and to my fellow mods (and hopefully the community) for sticking with me through this change!

If you read my history you'll know I'm a nurse applying for a position that's gonna mean less money but also less physical job, stable sleeping patterns and your regular 5 day workweek.

today I said goodbye to a group of coworkers I like working with. I was discreet about the new job, but I'm gonna miss working with them.

It makes me don't want to quit.

If you were ever here, how did you solve this?

There is literally 0 chance the area I live in will be blue. Does me going out and voting actually do anything besides add to the popular vote tally?

Even if you don't want to make it, I've never been in a supermarket that doesn't offer a fresher option. I've even been in gas stations that offer what they at least claim is fresh potato salad.

Maybe if you really, really wanted potato salad and you were in a food desert but the corner 7-11 has canned potato salad you might buy it, but I've never seen this before in my life.

I don't get it.

Google and various websites says 28g of pecans is between 185 and 195 calories, how in the world are praline pecans much less calories?

I feel proud of being here for a year and feels like I have better mental health due to the better quality of the conversations I have been in.

As stupid as it says on the tin. Can you remove hair clogs with Nair?

EDIT: I don't actually have a drain that needs to be unclogged. This is a showerthoughtquestion.

Is there some connection to the nation?

Just curious, I watched the movie and wondering if the movie is accurate to how powerful he was. Was he able to take on several crime families? Could he have succeeded if he didn't die?

Also was he the result of the Commision Trials? My cousin keeps insisting he was.

I was pronouncing it "Jizz Lane" and found out it is a hard G.

I am potentially looking at buying a new car in next coming months. I'm looking at the Nissan rogue because my current car is Nissan and I've been pleased with it for the past 12 years and I would like the extra room an suv has. The only thing I don't like is that the majority of suvs are AWD. Nissan does make the rogue in FWD but I was only able to find 1 in my nearby dealerships. So it seems that if I want an suv I'm stuck with AWD or I have to stick with a sedan. For context, my first and current car is a 2012 Nissan versa.

Tldr: do the benefits of AWD and having an suv outweigh the downside of having to replace every tire if you get a flat in one with AWD. Or should I just try and stick with FWD?

EDIT: thank you for all the responses. It is very clear now that I do not need AWD and will stick with FWD. And apparently, I need to look into different cars makers. I have had good luck with my Nissan but according to comments Nissan isn't a good company anymore.

EDIT 2: I didn't realize that there are 2 different types of AWD. There's full and reactive. Technically, the car I have now is AWD because it does divert power to the back wheels if it detects them slipping. My apologies for not fully understanding the terminology before making the post. My original post was directed towards full AWD, when there is power to all wheels all the time. Thanks for the help !

I'm confident the answer to the initial question is "yes", but in my little corner of the world I've never met a sculptor - no students, no teachers, no amateurs or professionals - and I don't recall hearing about significant sculptures being erected anywhere in the last few decades.

Sculpting fascinates me, but I'm totally ignorant of how it works. If you’re a sculptor -

  • when/how did you start? Do you start with clay and pottery?
  • How do you "practice"? Play-doh? Gotta imagine it's different based on your preferred medium?
  • do artists still use marble? Seems like it'd be insanely expensive & one mistake screws the whole thing up

I recently saw a comment chain about nuclear bombs, and that led me to thinking about this. Say there is a nuclear explosion in the downtown of my US city. I survive relatively fine, but obviously the main part of the city has been destroyed, while major zones extending from the center were also badly damaged. What would be a good response to (a) survive and (b) help out the recovery effort?

There’s this woman I work with who seems to have her accent change randomly.

Some days she sounds like a typical American accent, then others she sounds like she has a Caribbean accent and others she sounds like she has a French accent, and others she sounds like she has an Arabic accent. Other days her voice is super messed up, like she’s been screaming.

Beyond her voice changing, she is an odd person to work with. She’s gotten into public, loud vocal spats with other coworkers even in meetings. She was very nice and sweet with me when I first had to interact with her but that all changed when I made an honest mistake one time and she went off on me and wouldn’t stop until I ignored her and now I just keep my distance unless I have to. Others have said similar things about her as well.

I’ve wondered if maybe she has a personality disorder, but I would think that would also cause her to not do her job correctly?

I don’t know, I’m just curious. This is something I’ve never experienced before and wondering what this could be.

This is both a shower thought and a stupid question but I think it fits this community better.

Since air conditioning is apparently heating the local environment while cooling down a house I was asking myself whether it would be possible to basically either build a layer of glass/plexiglass right over the actual outer structure of a house, leaving a tiny gap between wall and glass, or at least put a house in a kind of glasshouse dome with a double glass wall. And consequently inject a sulfur compound, calcite etc into that "gap", basically creating a very tiny micro-atmosphere that has that sun blocking effect.

Would that work, just logically/technically? Would the environment heat up less, more, or just the same as with geoengineering in the stratosphere? Would it even cool down a house/keep it cool at all?

I get signs telling you there's a bump ahead, or deer might run out in front of you, but I've never understood why there are signs telling people not to build unlawful driveways. Are that many people doing it on a daily basis in that area that they need a fully visible sign? Surely it's just an ordinance, why does it need a road sign?

I've been wondering this for years and hope someone has an answer that makes sense.

I'm not meaning similar posts or the same post but in different communities. I've been seeing duplicate posts in the same community by the same people with the same upvotes/downvotes. A literal duplicate.

Sometimes it's like I'm scrolling the same feed on repeat with a seamless transition.

Let me preface this by saying I am a man, and smoked a little too much, so I'm sitting here thinking... what is or was the original purpose of a bra? Weight support? Vanity? Covering the nips so people's eyes met your eyes and you can have a normal conversation? Like what's it all about?

this is strange, but I have the feeling I have to apply more sunscreen to my arms and shoulders. OTOH I feel my legs and torso don't need as much stuff, neither does my face.

When I sunbath I only wear my swim trunks and I lay on the ground, which means my legs and torso receive the same amount of radiation as my arms and shoulders.

I could understand that my arms and shoulders needed more sunscreen if I walked under the sun, but that's rarely the case: I lay on the ground.

Does this happen to you?

my arms are thinner than my legs: do I need more sunscreen in the areas where blood vessels are thinner / muscles are leaner?

I'm going on my first overseas trip with my girlfriend since we started dating. I worked hard all last year to earn and save money for this trip. It will be our first international trip ever, and I want to make it perfect, memorable, and the best trip of our lives.

I've read countless articles online to ensure everything is perfect. It felt overwhelming to the point that my head started to hurt. Fortunately, I found an article that provided a detailed guideline, and it seemed like the perfect guide. My girlfriend and I have been following it, and it has been very helpful so far.

However, I decided to come to this community to seek additional guidance, advice, and tips from you all, just in case the article missed something important. My girlfriend and I would greatly appreciate any travel tips, advice, and guidance you have, as this is our first trip abroad together.
