I work in tech. Everything is about ROI, productivity gains, savings, while I still grind through 40-hour weeks for shit pay, pretending I care about any of this.

We're automating everything, and what for? To scale faster. To take on more projects. Increase productivity.

All the tech advancements and automation... Stupid AI hype... and somehow we're all still working 40 hours, 5 days a week. We just get more tasks. Never-ending list of tasks.

I just want to sit in a meadow and have a tea picnic.

This whole system is a scam.

When the federal government shuts down, the first things to get hit are the very programs Trump has never supported

national parks,

food stamps,

basic government services,

and paychecks for federal workers.

To him, that’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

A shutdown lines up with what he’s always wanted to cut or undermine.

He also doesn’t seem concerned about the human cost.

Millions of Americans go without pay or access to services, but he treats that disruption as leverage.

In my view, he’d rather see the government shut down than see those programs continue.

So my position is: Trump actually wants the shutdown, not just as a bargaining chip, but because it halts things he’d prefer not to fund in the first place.

Isn’t having this power or government not work his end goal to seize control?

And so why work for no benefits or pay?

Title. Nervous something is happening despite the comment included to the opposite. What do? Email is copied below:

Please send me a semi-detailed listing of all the jobs you perform on a routine basis. I want to get a jump on any potential ask regarding duplicity that may come with the way the structuring is supposed to take place after implementation of any software changes.

This is not meant to be a justify your job request, but please be as detailed as you can be so that when I meet with people again, I will have a bullet point list to reference. If I could get this in the next couple weeks I would greatly appreciate it.

Again, this exercise is just me being proactive with something in writing so that my failing memory is not the only reference I rely on.

I work full time in a produce department and for the first time in a month, we actually had a closer scheduled and the department finally looked decent in the morning. That one change made me realize just how bad things normally are.

It’s usually just me and one other person in the morning, and we’re expected to both stock the shelves AND break down the truck. Yeah it’s technically possible with two people but we have to run around just to do it. That means we have to run around basically working three jobs worth of labor at once just to "catch up."

What’s even worse than the workload is the gaslighting. When I go all out I’m really tired by the end of my shift. But when I slow down to a reasonable pace suddenly it’s, “Why’s the department looking bad?” or “What’s going on with you guys today you’re moving like snails?” He actually said if this keeps going he’s going to have to make some schedule changes and hire new guys for the morning if we’re not going to be able to keep up.

The last week I finally decided to match the pace of everyone else in the department (Who work very slow, always on their phones or hiding in the bathroom) and everything started falling apart.

What’s funny is my boss noticed things were looking worse in the department the last week. I didn’t admit to him that I’ve purposely slowed down to a normal pace but the fact that he noticed just shows that means I’m 100% the one who makes the department look good or not and if I slow down because the other co workers suck the whole place suffers. I don’t get how he doesn’t see it? I mean he must.

Also this dude is a full blown micromanager. He’s constantly hovering, asking “What are you doing now?” or “What’s next?” Sometimes he’ll literally ask that right as I’m walking back from break, like I’m supposed to know what to do before I even get a chance to see the floor again. It’s nonstop.

And then there’s the bathroom comments. If someone takes 10-15 minutes and clearly went to take a shit, it’s “Where were you?” or “Did you get lost?” Or he’ll joke (but not really joking) like, “Damn why does everyone here shit so much?” He actually came into the department and said to everyone that if bathroom breaks last 20 minutes, they’ll count as our second break.

Meanwhile, there’s a coworker who regularly disappears for 45-50 minute breaks and nothing gets said. But I came back 4 minutes late once (34 minutes total) and got told, “We gotta work on our breaks. You were 4 minutes over”

He also makes these comments about how he shouldn’t have to babysit us, or we need to be better when he’s not around. It’s just more passive aggressive guilt tripping. The kind of comment that makes it feel like everything is your fault no matter what you do.

I’m just so done. I’ve realized the only reason things “run smoothly” is because I’m breaking my back to keep them from falling apart. And now I’m being micromanaged, overworked, and guilted on top of it.

The obvious answers is to get another job and I’m working on it. It’s just tough and I can’t find anything at the moment that will pay enough. So Idk what to do for the time being. I’m typically able to remain pretty stoic and brush things off my shoulders easily but I do feel myself getting to a point where I might actually yell at him.

I know this doesn’t really matter as much and it’s more of a mental thing but I’m a big guy. I’m 6’1, 260 pounds. This guy is like 5’6. So when he talks to me like he does it’s like “Ugh you know you only really have power over me right now because of your position”. People have actually said he has a napoleon complex and one of these days someone is gonna punch him lmao

I just don’t get what his problem is. He’s only 30 and I’m 2 years younger than him.

And our manager has said “You saw the email…” four times already. It’s not a meeting that could have been an email, it’s a meeting that was an email, or several emails.

Accidentally saw a coworker’s paystub on the printer. Turns out they’re making $6/hr more than me for literally the same role, same responsibilities, and almost identical experience. We even started around the same time. It’s not like they negotiated some rare skill either it’s just random luck that their offer came from a different manager. I feel like I’ve been underpaid for years without knowing it. Do I bring this up to HR or is it just another reason to update my resume and get out?

I don’t hate mine but I did for a long time. But I know so many people here do and I work with people wanting to make the leap out.

I just wanted to say I see you. The reasons are endless: survival pressure, abandoned dreams, jobs poisoned by bad leadership.

So I wrote something for all the job haters, in case it gives words to what you’re feeling.

Solidarity.

I always find it shitty that you have to have sick time in order to be allowed to stay home, like i got to plan when i get sick. Also you need to have a Dr excuse or you get a warning or maybe fired. I get it if you take advantage and call off all the time that’s a problem, but sometimes you have a Flu or not feeling well and you have to spend money and time to go to the Dr just to be told to rest which you already knew. Also most companies health insurance plans suck so you pretty much gotta pay for a Dr’s excuse.

I was accosted by my boss' boss.

It's a freaking library and this city librarian, her old geriatric ass, came to me, a part timer with no benefits, in an at will position, asked me about the status of a suspension of a library patron.

I had no idea how to find that information on the spot or if it was even my responsibility. I am not a librarian in my job title, I am not full time, I am not responsible for writing up suspension letters.

Yet this decrepit hag expected me to know. She got annoyed that I didn't know. Made a comment that "I'm paid to sit there and know these things."

This was at the reference desk in the quiet zone, in clear view and earshot from patrons.

Full time managers are in charge of writing suspensions and keeping track. Apparently we had a sharepoint excel file that shows all active suspensions. I was never informed to have this file ready to go on the spot. I was never informed to expect anyone at management level to ask me for this information on the spot.

She limped her way to my desk from her office, she has a bad knee, and then accosted me about this information that I did not have and did not know I was responsible for.

And the cherry on top is that this patron's suspension was expired a month ago, so he was completely fine to be in the library and he was reading the entire time this situation was going on.

Now I'm expecting a talk with my manager about proper training.

I've already detailed this entire bullshit with the city's union, which I can't even be a part of because of my at will status.

She's created problems before. Unjustly demoted people, fired people, and got in trouble with the library board with mishandling funds. I've had many conversations with people in similar positions about the bullshit she has pulled because she felt like it. They told me to just be off her radar and I'll be fine...

And now here I am blindsided.

All my passion and all my desire to stay at this job is now thrown out the window. The only thing she will ever remember me for is not knowing something I wasn't responsible for.

Thankfully I also work with the County, part time but permanent, benefits and union.
