There's 3 types of people in this world: those who can count and those who can't.

Question for the wildlife people:: I can hear an owl hooting outside. It's 2pm. I've not generally known owls to hoot at this time, although I know some don't always sleep all day. Just feeling like a hoot? Injured? Overheating? Normal?

Very distinct "Hoot-hoo-hoot". Always in triples, second one slightly shorter (fractions of a second) than the first and last one. It's been intermittent since I woke up about 8:30. Been going about 15 mins this time

It might be a dove. Does it sound like this?

[โ€“] Baku@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Omg that's exactly it! Whichever one lives in the tree seems to only be doing the part from :06-:10

TIL the thing I've thought was an owl I'd actually just a dove! Had no clue they made that noise. Guess I need to brush up on what exactly an owl sounds like. Thanks raven!

I recommend the Museums Victoria Field Guide app. It has most animals you are likely to encounter, and includes recordings of bird calls.

For the Android users, there's a cool app on F-Droid called whoBird that identifies bird songs/squawks. Its ace.

Yep pouring down here in Thornbury. Fast moving and won't last long, but the garden really really needs it so I'm grateful.

All the new plants I put in today will be very grateful - I gave them a good watering, but this sort of soaking is what they really need.
