A group of tourists had stopped near the Eldgjá volcanic canyon. One of the tourists, a woman, left the bus to change her clothes and freshen up. When she returned, her appearance was different enough that the other passengers didn't recognize her. Meanwhile, someone reported her missing, and a search party was organized.
The woman, unaware that she was the "missing person," joined the search effort. She only realized the mistake hours later when she recognized the description being circulated - she was searching for herself. The misunderstanding was then cleared up, and the search was called off.
