KYIV — Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered another 160,000 Russian citizens be called up to serve in the military, Russian news agency Interfax reported Monday.

Russia drafts men aged 18 to 30 years old. The new order, starting April 1 and to be completed by July 15, comes amid the ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, brokered by the United States.

Well, at least their prisons will be empty at this rate.

Putin's fixed the unemployment problem!

[–] jagermo@feddit.org 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And that is a huge problem. If he ends the war, there will be thousands of men, most of them traumatized and used to the comparatively good army salary. They will either become mercenaries or criminals.

He needs a forever war.

That's the cool thing about conscripting criminals. When they come back, they are still criminals, they don't become criminals.

With added trauma, some military experience and probably having stolen military equipment...

[–] TwanHE@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Yep, it already happened with the released Wagner prisoners. They get home, get drunk, and kill their neighbours

[–] smokinliver@sopuli.xyz 31 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

With the current rate of losses this gives him just over 100 days until he needs the next batch of cannon fodder

[–] Railcar8095@lemm.ee 8 points 2 weeks ago

That assumes they are picking the cannon fodder at random. If they leaned towards the most apt for combat (young, relatively healthy and somewhat stable) then the next batch well probably be worse than the previous. If they also cheap out more on training and equipment... They might need a batch sonnet than that.

I thought they ran out of that age group awhile ago. Didn't they have to go to the 50+ years ago?

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They prefer to use older people but they ran out of them too I am pretty sure..

What it is worse ukraine will need to go younger and younger too going forward.

That's just the war of attrition in nuts and bolts

[–] Domino 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

From what I understand Russia went from young to old when finding people, Ukraine has gone from old to young.

[–] Nomecks@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

Sort of. They wiped out minorities and undesireables first.

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Russians aren't often conscripted when they have "important" jobs.

Maybe this just means that more working Russians will get conscripted.

[–] deadcream@sopuli.xyz 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Nobody have cancelled the process of aging yet. As long as people keep making babies, the supply of fresh 18-year-olds won't dwindle.

Anyway, this is a regular conscription for mandatory military service that's performed twice a year in Russia for all young men.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

But who is working in their factories then? Are you Russian?

[–] deadcream@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well factory workers have a slightly lower chance of dying, even account for strikes against military factories. So don't need to be replaced as much as soldiers.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Lol, Russian it is.

[–] barnaclebutt@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Basically Zapp Brannigan at this point. Except less fun and more murderous dictator.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

We need that woman to come back and give the new recruits pocketfuls of sunflower seeds. So sunflowers will grow when they die on Ukrainian soil... Slava Ukrayini!

Imagine if Russia directed these resources into fighting climate change or building infrastructure in Russia

[–] Lewo@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's literally just a planned spring draft. Happens every year from April 1st to July 15th and then there's the autumn draft from October 1st to December 31st. The planned numbers are higher than before (160k vs 150k in 2024), and I'm sure a number of conscripts will be coerced into signing a contract again, but this isn't exactly an unexpected event.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Army conscription is always weird every time it happens and should always be treated as such.

[–] plz1@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Your government needs you to go die for Daddy Putin. You don't think forced military service is weird?

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 1 points 2 weeks ago

No, I don't think there's anything weird about it at all. Because of a conscription system my country has one of the biggest and most credible militaries in europe and thus wont need to worry about Putin attacking us. Not having a credible military is how you get invaded.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 6 points 2 weeks ago

Man I thought Russia had this giant population they could pick from.

160k is... Not going to be enough.

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 4 points 2 weeks ago

Operation Human Shield. Just cannon fodder.

[–] eddanja@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I see the ceasefire is going well.
