some prerequisite info- my server is running ESXi 7.0 U3. The VM in question is running Windows Server 2019. It is not up 24/7, i mostly use it as a backup server. I'm aware a NAS would be better, but the server was free and i am a broke college student. I have multiple clients that need to connect to this, including windows 10 machines and multiple mac laptops running high sierra and mojave.

I'm pretty new to networking (as well as owning a giant server that my roommate hates me for). I would like to use zerotier (or something similar, i have tried OpenVPN and would like to never touch it again) to:

  1. remote into my server via windows remote desktop connection.
  2. remotely transfer files. This is the most important part- i'd like to just go into file explorer and drag in files from outside my network.

I already have ZT networks created and joined, i just need to know how to configure it so that the aforementioned steps are possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got no idea how to use windows rd but what I got at home to transfer files is just essentially running ubuntu server and file transfer and control of the Pc remotely can be done simply by using ssh and sftp

Hey, I use this configuration. Assuming, if you have ZEROTIER installed on two devices then in my.zerotier check what IP address the server is assigned. On the other machine you enter that address in rdp and it connects. The same with accessing a network resource, you map the share, entering the IP address from the ZEROTIER server
