it also shows who arbitrarily counts as white, because i'd wager most people wouldn't think much about seeing eastern european stuff classed as "ethnic"

I moved from Britain to Canada. My local supermarket has Bri'ish imports in the "ethnic" aisle.

Some of the Safeway's near me now have a large "Global Market" aisle, which I think describes that section better

"International" also works

[–] m4xie@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Walmart uses the term "international", which as you say is much better.

What food do Canadians import from Britain?

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

So much... My Walmart has a British Aisle on its own. Sauces, cookies, spreads, candies, drinks, 'crisps' (No.), etc...

An outlander is anyone born and raised outside of Morrrowind. Most Dunmer think anyone who isn't a native-born Dunmer is an outlander. Dunmer with Western words and ways are also immediately identified as outlanders -- we're very sensitive to accents, clothes, and manners in Morrowind. Outlanders are foreigners, and Morrowind doesn't like foreigners.

Is this an American thing ? I've not heard anyone use the term in that manner.

Ron Swanson is an exaggeration but it's being used in that manner here. Normally ethnic would refer to something from farther away than our southern neighbor.

as other comments have pointed out it isn’t really always meant maliciously. there’s literally aisles in stores all across the continent labeled as ethnic and people understand what it means. there’s usually a collection of imported foods.

it isn’t just white people being racist, this is a continent of immigrants where there are so many minorities that the old world, traditional ethnographic lines start to blur and fall apart. you hear black and latino people using the term all the time. old vietnamese grannies here in the middle of the country say it a lot. the fact of the matter is there is a white majority undercut by significant black and latin minorities in most demographics across english-speaking north america with a smattering coalition of smaller yet minorities that, when put together, have enough power and political capital to have a seat at the table with everyone else. ethnic is one of the catch all terms that ends up getting used both inside and outside the group, and not just in food. it’s just a part of the north american english dialect continuum.

that said, racists do tend to use the word as a euphemism when they really want to say a slur but can’t.

but anyway, in short: OP is basically correct. it literally does just mean “you’re from somewhere and it isn’t here bc you’re not like one of the 3 kinds of people we usually see.” if you’re not someone who lives on the american continent you might have trouble understanding why people find utility in such a term but it is a functional term and not necessarily prejudiced.

how racist/bigoted/xenophobic the connotation ends up being depends on the person.

Everyone has ethnicity dipshit, it came free with your fucking Xbox.

it's just a little side-wink at the camera about how whiteness is made up but by people who don't think whiteness is made up

I'm also white, and would one day like to know what our ethnic food is like. I feel like we don't have our own; we just take everyone else's.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 6 days ago

it's so strange how common this sentiment is, people just completely forget about french and italian cuisine, and stuff like goulash which is arguably the most violently white food imaginable.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago

Bread sandwich, burgers and beans on toast

As if White is not also ethnic. Though one could argue that White is not an ethnicity since ethnicity is more fine grained that race. But then if one argues that then the same would apply to Black, or Asian.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 6 days ago

"asian" at least makes some sense since the features you think of are mostly found in that one area, but "black" and "white" are completely fucking useless. The terms are neither fully based on skin colour nor just about where someone is from, it's utterly arbitrary whether someone is black or white.
Like "black" seems to basically just means afro-american, and "white" somehow includes spaniards but not japanese people, so what the fuck is even the point

it's such a fucking anglo thing to categorize people like this.
