Hi guys! I've been here and there in the fediverse since a quite few years...always liked pleroma and mastodon, but always have a very bad luck. Every instance I went , every instance closed... Any good advice to choose an instance? I'm kinda tired of being exporting and exporting ad infinitum

I wonder, when you chose those instances, how far from the top they have been comparing by users count.

I don’t know where you should go, but please stay away from mine! 🤣

Always check terms and privacy policy before signing up, but these seem like they will be here to stay:

Those are all Lemmy and PieFed, and I'm not so familiar with Mastodon and others. Maybe look at mas.to ?

https://fedidb.com/ is good for picking an instance with a substantial user count and shows how long the instance has been running.

instance size is not necessarily a strong signal that the instance is safer.

He didn't suggest that it was safer. Just large usercount, and long running status.

[–] rglullis@communick.news 2 points 2 days ago

Safer in the sense of "less likely to go down or disappear".

I think the safest thing would be self-hosting your own solo GoToSocial instance. With SLURP you could import your entire Mastodon archive… and if you’re not proficient, coding-wise, you could install GoToSocial via YunoHost.org, which is so easy to follow, a total newbie could do it (speaking from experience). The only requirement would be a basic VPS (say, about 5 Euros a month). If you could give up 1-2 coffees a month, it’s not that big of an expense. I personally love my GtS account, as I get to personalize it, setting character limits, uploading my own custom emojis, etc.

this is nice, I'll do a research. I know yuno but never use it because I can't have 24/7 raspberry or old pc working

Thanks! I personally use a VPS because I don’t have a stable connection at home. If you could spare 4 or 5 Euros a month, I would definitely recommend self-hosting

If you are willing to have professional support and also support the underlying projects: Communick offers accounts only for paying-members. $29/year gives you an account on Mastodon, Lemmy, Funkwhale and Matrix, and we pledge to give 20% of the profits to the fediverse projects that we offer.

Presumably USD ? Not being an ass but NZ, Australia Canada amongst others use the "dollar" and this is an international forum.

But thanks for this, it's really interesting !

The HTTP response times are sometimes a little rough, but the team has managed to keep up a large part of the fediverse for the past few years. It's impressive, and I'm happy that I ended up chosing lemmy.world after migrating from lemmy.ml.

The group behind it or others similar. When you are on a small self hosted instance. You are at the mercy of a hobby admins time and skill. Which is no dig at them. Sometimes it just becomes too much.

I have had a number of Mastodon accounts since 2017 with the groups Mastodon servers. They run themselves as a serious organization. Providing services of a quality absolutely worth paying for. All with donations.
