Welcome to a Star Trek community where you’re free to chat and share your opinions about all things Trek!

I want to have a place where fans can come to praise, discuss, and even criticise things in the Star Trek franchise. No show or movie is perfect, and I don't believe people should be silenced for having a dissenting opinion. That being said, there are still a few rules.

Be Nice - No personal attacks. You can disagree with someone's opinion, but it needs to stop there.

No Slurs - This is applicable to ethnicity, religion, gender, or anything else.

No Adult Content - Keep it family friendly.

No Spamming or Trolling - Consistently spamming comments or trolling is just not needed.

Keep Topics Trek Related - This is a Star Trek community, so of course discussion should stay in that area! That means no real world politics.

I made mp3s of all seven seasons of TNG so I can listen to them like audiobooks. I listened to Skin of Evil this week and really enjoyed it.

I thought listening this way wouldn’t be very different since I’ve seen the episodes so often. But surprisingly a lot of the lines and scenes land a bit differently this way.

I did something similar to TOS, and it's surprising how well they can be understood still! Of course the looks and facial expressions are missing, but I picked up a lot more from the voices. It definitely gives a different perspective to the episode.

What a coincidence! I wasn't expecting anyone to know what I was talking about :) That's great - I must do TOS as well at some point. It's great that this has given the episodes a new lease of life.

I got the idea from something I read about a teacher in a film class or something similar that had their students listen to TOS as an exercise, and I decided to try it myself! I still prefer watching to listening, but it's been pretty nice.

I was also doing something similar during my Voyager rewatch recently. There's quite a number of episodes that are very generic, or sometimes just ones I don't like that well, so I just listened to some of them as I worked on something else in the room. In that case I didn't convert them to audio so I could still watch if I wanted.

I watched the last episode of SNW S3, (I have to wait a year for more?!) zipped right through a chunk of the final season of Voyager, and listened to the second Khan episode too.

I made the mistake of watching a few of the first episodes of Babylon 5 in advance of finishing Voyager, and I've been really enjoying that! Now I don't feel like watching the rest of Voyager. ;-) The basic premise reminds me a lot of DS9, so I can understand the comparisons, but judging by the little hints they've been dropping it does seem like it's going to go a different direction.

It's an audio drama similar to the Doctor Who audio shows they do with the older doctors. It's set in the time period between the TOS episode Space Seed and the TOS movie Wrath of Khan. So far it's been pretty interesting, might be worth a listen.

It should be on all the podcast platforms as well as YouTube, but here's an RSS feed if you're interested.

Cool, I'll check it out.

When my wife started her journey of watching Star Trek with me we started SNW before Discovery and she was lost and curious about the first episode of SNW and Pike's inability to reveal certain details to Batel. So after the first season of SNW we watched DIS up until the split between the two shows. I told her after that DIS gets even stranger, and if she wants to continue with it we can, if she wants to skip it totally, we can. After finishing SNW she asked why we stopped with DIS. So we are now 6 episodes deep into season 3. She is still unsure how she feels about it, but wants to see the conclusion (I also have not seen the final season, and cannot recall if I watched season 4 or not).

We also watched a handful of TAS, the more tribbles episode, the survivor(an alien copied a crew member's husband), the infinite Vulcan (giant Spock), the magics of megas-tu (weird mythology episode), once upon a planet (homocidal computer running an amusement planet), Mudd's passion (lovey dovey Spock).

There are some good episodes of TAS and there are some Why?!? episodes, and lots of "I cannot imagine DeForest Kelley saying that" lines.

We also watched the final episode of this seasons SNW.

Oh, that would be confusing! I think I gave up before I got to the Discovery episode where he sees his future, but I had the benefit of seeing the TOS episodes and just extrapolated what happened from the flashbacks. If I hadn't known that information it would have been a confusing first episode!

I agree on TAS. The quality swings pretty wildly at times. I usually end up recommending it to people that liked TOS, with a few caveats!

It's disappointing that the SNW season went so fast, but at least we're supposed to get 16 more episodes! I admit I was a little underwhelmed with the season overall, but it was still pretty fun. I'm thinking of putting up a season discussion post later on, so I'll probably write more specifically there.

The opening scene of ~~Discovery~~ SNW has Pike eating breakfast with Batel and telling her he cannot discuss what is bothering him because she does not have clearance.

I admit I was a little underwhelmed with the season overall, but it was still pretty fun.

I enjoyed it. It was not as frantic as the previous season. it felt more TOS, which I enjoyed.

Wasn't that scene in the first SNW episode? Because I remember that one, I had been referring to the Discovery episode that they showed in the flashbacks for that episode. From what I've heard and what they said in SNW 1x10, he used the time crystals to see his accident.

Yes, I meant SNW. And that is where she was confused (and me too apparently) about what was happening at the start of a brand new show.

[–] stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

The way they set it up definitely assumed everyone had seen Discovery! It would have been nice if they had laid it out a little better.

I like threads like this, they're fun!

I caught the Strange New Worlds finale a few days ago. It was a good way to tie up a fun season!

Glad you like them!

It was a pretty good episode. I definitely could tell they were thinking it could be the end of the whole series, but fortunately we have more on the way!
