Don't mean to be a hater, but every time I hear about things like this the only thing I can think of are points of failure. The future seems cool until your rearview visibility stops working mid drive because of a software issue.

Yeah I'm with you. Given Tesla's insistence on having only the centre screen for the driver in the Model 3 I can't see removing any mirrors as feasible.

If this is some testing they're doing for a driverless model though it makes more sense.

I mean public busses in my city have this. Maybe elon rode a bus for once?

Buses in your city have a unique camera setup?

[-] Freeman 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Yeah, idk about "unique". What I want to say is that the idea of putting cameras in aerodynamic casing on the side of a vehicle to reduce drag isn't new. Doesn't look as fancy and as flimsy but thats a pluss I presume. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=bus+with+cameras+as+mirrors&t=fpas&iax=images&ia=images

Not OP but yeah probably. It would be surprising if a camera setup could not be unique to a vehicle, unless every vehicle was the same size and shape.

I don't think that car would be street legal in may state. Side mirrors and a rearview mirror are required equipment. I suppose that is something that will eventually change if more vehicles adopt this kind of setup.

Yeah, didn't Tesla try to delete the mirrors from the initial semi truck design, but later added them back due to regulations?
