KDE was a huge part of my life for well over a decade, from when I first installed a v1 beta, to when I got my CVS commit rights circa 2000, to coding and organizing events all the way through 2010. Eventually, though, my life went a different direction.

Well today I was cleaning up my linkedin connections, trying to keep the network relevant (fewer vectors for spam or whatever) and I removed all but four of my dozens of KDE and former KDE contacts. It was interesting clicking through each profile -- so many of those early contributors are now CEOs, presidents, partners, founders, etc. Open source software experience, and the KDE community experience clearly drew in a lot of very talented and ambitious people.

So now I'm just here to reminisce. How's everyone doing? When did you discover KDE?

Hello! I'd like to write a little frontend for klipper, KDE's clipboard manager. I can access its content with qdbus:

qdbus org.kde.klipper /klipper org.kde.klipper.klipper.getClipboardHistoryMenu

qdbus org.kde.klipper /klipper org.kde.klipper.klipper.getClipboardHistoryItem 5

but how can I activate the selected item, placing it first? If it's only text, I can do this:

qdbus org.kde.klipper /klipper org.kde.klipper.klipper.setClipboardContents "$(qdbus org.kde.klipper /klipper org.kde.klipper.klipper.getClipboardHistoryItem 5)"

but what if it has a different MIME type, like an image or a file? Is there a way to tell klipper "activate element 5"?

Bugs that may have muddled data when imported, or features missing from charts, or crashes in edge case circumstances have now been resolved.

There's a proposal at the linked blog post for how to clean up the config directory.

The post goes into detail which changes would be required in KDE software using Qt.

After reading, I just have one question (the blog does not seem to have a comment section): how does this handle transitioning from the old location to the new location? Imagine having a katerc config file under ~/.config and one under ~/.config/kate (which is the suggestion from the post) - should those be merged once and then the old one gets deleted?

This week in KDE: we modernized the breeze cursors, created a new banner component and released a "KDE For Travelers" webpage.

I came across this setting, but I'm not sure what it does. ~~What is an activity? What are the files of that activity?~~ I watched this video, so I have an idea of what activities are, but it still doesn't clarify what this setting does.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/1114285

For quite some time now, KDE has intermittently been unable to go to sleep. It will either go to a black screen with the cursor still showing, and the computer running, or it will show a half frozen sddm looking screen with the computer still running. The computer, in both cases, will be wholly unresponsive, and the only way to get out of it is to forcefully shutdown the PC by, for example, holding the power button.

Has anyone else been having this issue?
