Or to make it more realistic, let it expand like the universe. I.e. add extra space between each two pixels:

example

w=blank/white, b=non-blank
wwwww
wbbbw
wbbww
wwwww
->
wwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwww
wwbwbwbwww
wwwwwwwwww
wwbwbwwwww
wwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwww

Or keep non-blank pixels together, because of pixel bounds.
