Can someone explain why? Is there a religous base for this? Or is there another reason?

It seems like with almost any religion I learn about their gods are absolute assholes which of course makes their fanatical followers even bigger assholes...

How are we not all defiant hardasses giving the sky the finger all day every day? God is an asshole, all of em.

the people that imagined all the gods that are assholes, are assholes themselves and made the gods assholes to have an excuse for why everyone should just accept all this insane shit. It works because people are stupid and believe any utter bullshit people spew as long as they build a hall with good acoustics and wear flowing robes first, then mix in a little bit of the specific lies they want to hear.
