I think society back then had way different norms around violence. They used to hit kids for misbehaving.
Yeah and just 50 years prior you could still challenge a man to a duel to the death just for insulting your hat.
Back then? Hell just had a co worker tell me she beat her kids if they get out of line.
It's much much more rare. At least in the west.
