MCI bypassed fierce local and state resitance to build their original network by using microwave towers on private land.
Rumor was, hundreds of local politicians abused zoning regulations etc. to help AT&T maintain monopoly. Sprint long distance bypassed local interference by using federally protected railroad rights.
