Kabosu is the original doge ("very wow," etc.)

Cheems came with dogelore later on

If the text is accurate, “falling asleep” is probably more humane than chemo would have been, anyway.

The more I think about it, it's somehow an even more appropriate tribute to Cheems that it's not even him in the picture
