This is kind of a weird request, but I recently discovered that Barotrauma's source code is available on github. I own the game and plan to play it that way, but hypothetically could I download the files, compile the game, and play it that way?

The EULA states that you are not allowed to remove Steam's DRM from the game, so the compiled version and the Steam version will have to be authenticated through Steam's servers anyway. It looks like you can compile the game with Visual Studio, but you won't be able to play it without buying it first or breaking laws.

Yeah, according to the Contributing.md on the github it is missing some files that are included if you buy a copy of the game:

The BarotraumaShared/Content folder, which contains Barotrauma's art, item XMLs, sounds, and other assets, is not included in the GitHub repository. If you have a legal copy of the game, you can copy the Content folder from the game's files to BarotraumaShared/Content.

Basically like OpenTTD/OpenRCT: The engine is free but you gotta find your own assets.
