Could I bother you for an explanation? I tried searching, there are a lot of results for the Atellan Farce/Oscan athletic games, but I feel I'm still missing context to get the reference.

Luigi comes from the Latin name Lodovicus

Mangione is Italian for "big eater" or a glutton. Manducus is Latin for glutton. Both are derived from mando, to chew.
