Intel underwent a massive redesign of their mobile chips where something like the i5-8250U eventually met the performance of the i7-4702MQ (these are just examples from recent memory) at a fraction of the TDP. And 7th Gen U Intel had about the same single core performance so I’m not going to jerk the T480 train here. What I mean is that they used way less power and made way less heat. Benefits are fewer sweaty palms and more time away from an outlet. Yes, you may argue neither of those are important, but they are a major improvement in portability which OP mentioned.
Oh hmm maybe. I will agree that the x220 battery runtime wasn't great, but it's a computer not a phone. I'm either checking an email (short runtime is fine) or e.g. hacking code all day (need ac adapter). And at least the battery is easily swappable unlike newer models with sealed batteries. But yes sure, there are good deals on t480 and even newer machines, so shop around.
