Summary

Denmark will convert 15% of its farmland into forests and natural habitats over the next 20 years to combat fertilizer runoff, which has caused severe oxygen depletion in Danish waters and marine life loss.

The $6.1 billion plan includes planting 1 billion trees and acquiring farmland, addressing emissions from agriculture, Denmark’s largest greenhouse gas source.

The initiative supports Denmark’s 2030 goal to cut emissions by 70% from 1990 levels and makes it the first country to impose a carbon tax on agriculture under its Green Tripartite agreement.

This is good news on paper but Denmark also reclassifies farmland as 'natural forest' and then it counts towards these percentages. Sometimes the only thing that happens to an area is bureaucratic. Still, it's a net gain even if some of it is a lie.

There is also a rewilding project on Mols where some horses have been left to fend for themselves in a large area that's open to the public. The administration in charge of this rewilding project are receiving death threats on social media for "torturing animals" because the horses look a little thin during the winter months. Vets are monitoring them and they're fine, Danish people are just so disconnected from nature that the concept of an animal being hungry in winter is akin to torture in their mind.

Nature is a horrible place, but every animal deserves to be free. Perhaps it's the concept of freedom that people have trouble accepting. Until someone manages to design an improved version that functions without hunger and disease and predation, natural forests are still the superior habitat.
