Senator Chris Van Hollen is flying to El Salvador tomorrow "to check on [Mr Abrego García's] condition and discuss his return."

Many people I respect very much think this is a great thing.

but if I were a Central American Fascist Dictator like Bukele in such circumstances, I'd have a well-dressed lackey with 20 heavily armed men meet him at the airport, very politely escort him to a small nice hotel in the mountains and promise that the Dictator will arrive in about half an hour. Then let him wait. Then send the well-dressed lackey to the hotel every 3 to 6 hours to make some lame excuses, apologize profusely and explain that the Dictator is coming very soon. The well-dressed lackey and the 20 heavily armed men can do this for months, years even. Van Hollen will give up in a week.

I can't imagine that his trip will go any differently than the scenario above.
