I semi-seriously said in an earlier post that I'd be willing to bet Tesla uses GPS to measure mileage instead of any mechanical means. Now I'm not sure that was a joke and am curious how they actually do so. I've been under the impression that the odometer reading has to be measured by a mechanical device. I guess I need to look back into current regulations.
Historically they used either a mechanical counter that plugged into the transmission or (more recently) a wheel speed sensor(s).
Well I'll be damned.
