the local rumour is that the inlaws were nasty religious extremists

so maybe get them out of her life or stop their influence

still not the answer, she could have just taken her kids and left

Oh damn, that changes things. I did wonder why she kept in such close touch with her ex (?) husband and in-laws if they were separated but maybe there was an element of control that I didn't know about. Perhaps they threatened to go to court pursuing grandparents rights if she left and she tried to take out as many family members as possible to avoid them acting as flying monkeys.

I've now seen there was tension and 'dad doing things to hurt mum' but the article is paywalled.

To me that was language of a kid repeating what his mum had said, especially when it involved school (bills and reports). Though it's also interesting that the "day of the lunch", the dad dropped the son home but the daughter stuck with him until the evening. Though Erin did say that she felt the father favoured the daughter.

That's so interesting!! It sounds like all her connections with the family had taken a nosedive in the year or so leading up, but it could have been her pulling away.
