I set up a Cinny instance. If I link users directly to the Cinny instance it prompts them to create an account on my Matrix server but then they have to manually search for the space to join. If I grab the link directly to my space from Cinny, it links to matrix.to as an intermediary, which will prompt them to sign up with the matrix.org instance, which I DO NOT WANT. Is there no way to send an invite directly from/to my Cinny instance/space? You can only send invites via matrix.to?

Are you serious?

Here are step by step instructions.

  1. Open matrix web client
  2. Log in
  3. Open a room you wish to get the url for
  4. Look at the address bar

On element, this URL opens the room on any device, even if not logged in (and provides the option to either create an account, or sign into one). Cinny does not support this functionality. Entering the url without being logged in, does not work.

No, this is an elaborate and unfunny joke.

Here are step by step instructions.

Thank you. I tried this and it does not take me to the space. It does the same as Cinny. Just takes me to an empty...UI. I dunno what to call it.

It definitely works. Here is what I get when opening the sopuli lemmy instance matrix space, using a link from my instance of element.

Clicking "join" prompts me to either log in, or create an account, which on my element instance defaults to my matrix server.

Can you send me the exact link you used so I can see it?

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No.

But the link is formatted like this: https://element.myinstanceurl.com/#/room/#sopuli:matrix.org

Yeah so I just swapped your instance with app.element.io https://app.element.io/#/room/#sopuli:matrix.org and it just takes me to a welcome/login page. Just like Cinny.

It takes you to the room because you're already logged in.

I am not. I normally use a desktop application, I host the web client for my users.

Are you suggesting I invented this functionality that I actively use?

Here is the same url opened in firefox on my phone, where I have never accessed my matrix account via anything other than an app.

More likely, the element.io instance disables this functionality for some reason.

I don't know what you're doing. That's what I'm trying to figure out. What is that G for in the top left of both screenshots?

I've tried this on several Element instances that don't work. Like this one:

https://element.catgirl.cloud/#/room/#sopuli:matrix.org

It stands for guest. It replaces the account icon that would be visible, were I logged in.

Did you try logging in?

I opened an app.element.io link to the sopuli space, and even though it goes directly to the welcome/login page, once I log in, it immediately opened to the sopuli space.
