Honestly, I think it's because Europeans went to sleep and let the Americans alone in there for too long.
Best I can tell from the rather aimless freakout is that some obscure metric went down and people took it as a sign or failure or something? The first thing I saw be weird was some guy claim he wouldn't leave Twitter because half their Twitter followers wouldn't come with them to BS and than it died down before the mass US hysteria today.
I don't know if the verification thing has anything to do with it, frankly.
