Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes
This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".
Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.
Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:
[BB] This enemy is so difficult!
or
[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Crazy! I love The Surge 1 and 2, honestly, way more than DS3, Pinocchio or Lords of the Fallen. I can't remember ever getting lost in those games, the maps looked fairly unique to me. If I were to hop in today, I'd still manage to navigate most of the games from memory alone. Maybe not the end game areas, but the early game areas are still easy to recall vividly in my mind (and I played both games around release). The limb cutting system works really well too: you use it to farm gear sets, you can use it to deactivate parts of your enemy, you can use it to trigger weaknesses in elites and bosses. Yes, you don't get i-frames. You have to be smart about using it (git gud??). Don't try to perform a finishing move animation when there's five other exos about to hit your ass. But, I also don't remember parts of the game where that many enemies were around, it was usually only three at most. Finishing enemies had the perk of giving extra tech scrap, so it was supposed to be used only when finishing a fight. Plenty of cool exoskeletons in the game as well, sole cool weapons. And the game doesn't really overstays its welcome. It's around 20h, maybe? I remember doing 30h for the second one while doing pretty much everything. The story is also fairly cool in both games, with interesting final bosses.
Every review disagrees with you and honestly you're just being zealous.
Don't do the git gud thing when the game has a massive design flaw where you cannot even avoid finishing animations and bullshit like that. They auto trigger.
Like what you like, but man you're out to lunch on this one LOL
Just checked, reviews are around an average of 7 for both users and reviewers. Which is not a flying score, but also not that bad. And I'm certain that a lot of the less than positive reviews come from a fan base who used to think the OG dark souls was perfect and just didn't want to try anything slightly different at the time.
On top of that, you're straight up mistaken. I was pretty sure finishing moves/executions didn't auto trigger, but still decided to go on and check. They don't. You HAVE to press a button to trigger them. You can just light attack to finish an enemy if you are not ready to be animation locked. And I don't see that as a flaw. Honestly, it baffles me that DS gives you i-frames on crits, and some other random actions, like opening a door.
