  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (e.g. politics or societal debates).
  4. Stay calm: Don’t post angry or to vent or complain. We are a place where everyone can forget about their everyday or not so everyday worries for a moment. Venting, complaining, or posting from a place of anger or resentment doesn't fit the atmosphere we try to foster at all. Feel free to post those on !goodoffmychest@lemmy.world

The usual Sunday thread didn't get posted, and I missed it. So I'm posting it. Partly as an opportunity to talk about chickens, ngl. But also because I want to see how everyone else is doing.

Wait so you've actually trained your chicken goddess to poop on a designated spot using the method you described, or is she a natural sort of like cats? Also what color are your chickens?

Yeah. She's unusual though. We tried it with our rooster, that we thought was a hen, but we got him when he was a few months old, and it didn't work. I'm not sure if it failed because if his age, or because he's a giant numpty, but from what I've read, they do need to be young to have a chance of it working. It still usually won't.

She doesn't go to a single spot, because she can't, but she'll go to the nearest pad that's visually similar to what she's used to. Since she can't hold it in, pads need to be close to where she is. But she'll feel the stuff moving inside her, and at least try to go to one.

I suspect that she is a very atypical chicken in this respect as most of them will never pad train at all. Anywhere I've seen the method discussed, it's always with the disclaimer that it probably won't work.

We've got the marans hen that's all fancy. She's what's called a midnight majesty. That's black feathers that have a green or bluish green shine to them in the right lighting. Absolutely gorgeous.

The tiny volunteer hen is a striated buff color. She's definitely not intentionally bred for color. But she's very pretty. That creamy blonde that tapers back to a dark, almost black tail.

Big boy is what's called partridge. Majestic as fuck. I don't know how to describe it really, but he is amazing to see. In good lighting, he literally glows a little towards his head, and the black feathers have the same green iridescence that the marans has.

I can't get any pictures to upload right at the moment, but I'll try again in a few minutes.

For whatever reason, pics just won't upload right now. I'll try to remember to do it later, but I'm prone to forgetting such things.
