I'm always concerned that my weight will break it. I don't weigh that much but it's an irrational fear I have.
I put my clothes and stuff on it when I shower though.
The toilet is obviously designed to hold your weight, since its normal use involves sitting on it.
The lid spans about a foot across the bowl rim and is typically made of wood or plastic about 1/2" thick. Those materials are plenty strong enough to hold the weight of a human across that size span.
The only lids I would hesitate to sit on are the absolute bottom-dollar cheap plastic ones like this, where the lid has been hollowed out to save material.
I actually experienced breaking a toilet lid by sitting on it once (I'm like 70 kg). It wasn't even one of those crappy ones. The problem was that it was designed with a slight upward arch and far too few points of contact with the seat, so if you sat down in just the right way (and happened to have your wallet in your back pocket) all the force was concentrated in the perfect way to make it crack.
I used to sit down on toilet lids without batting an eye, but now I am scarred.
I have stood on top of a toilet lid. I am not a light man.
although I don't recommend standing on one, sitting is expected.
