Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Found a post on rxddit discussing that Lies of P is really high quality, and between the game's quality by itself and the recent DLC, they claimed it's among the best of its genre.

Another user chimed in and put together this comment that I found quite interesting (TL;DR at the bottom):

TL;DR: FromSoftware's level design and exploration are on a different level compared to Lies of P. While Lies of P has solid gameplay, its levels are linear and predictable, often looping back on themselves. In contrast, FromSoft games like Bloodborne and Elden Ring hide entire unique areas, bosses, music, and gear behind obscure paths or enemies, rewarding curiosity and exploration with awe-inspiring discoveries. These secrets and intricate designs make FromSoft titles feel special beyond just the "soulslike" label—something Lies of P hasn't quite achieved despite being a strong entry in the genre.

What are your thoughts on this? How important is the exploration to you?

I want to play LoP so I’ll pick it up on sale eventually.

That being said I want to highlight the second screenshot, the one that talks about Elden Ring subterranean shunning grounds.

I made almost the same comment here myself soon after I found this community and it feels very gratifying to see it echoed above.

Start going down a random well in Leyndell, follow down into Subterranean Shunning Grounds, past the hidden wall in the Cathedral of the Forsaken, past the hidden wall in the Frenzied Flame Proscription, down into Deeproot Depths and the Nameless Eternal City, ride the stone coffin to Ansel River Main and finally get a glimpse the Lake of Rot which restarts the cycle 👌

Definitely do! It's one of my favourites and is near and dear to my heart because of its story. Can't recommend it enough

That's quite funny and must feel redeeming :D It is a good area for sure
