Horses do really well without humans.
BLM estimates there are around 33338 wild horses in Nevada alone.
There is also the Chincoteague pony herd, which is a wild herd on the Assateague island off the coast of MD & VA. The herd has been established for almost 300 years since they swam off the wrecked Spanish galleon La Galga in 1750.
