It shouldn't be too late? He is five though. He only started this behaviour when he was four maybe but it's only gotten worse, especially since his dog friend who comes to visit has gotten sick. He will sniff anywhere his friend has been and goes through phases of obsessively sniffing him.

We let him outside and he has a doggy door, which he knows to use. He will go outside on his own to pee when we are home and awake, but when he is left alone or when it's night (perhaps because of the cold), he will mark inside.
