seems like they YOLO'd the experiment and then didnt bother to compile any results after it wasnt the hottest new thing any more and just moved on like it never happened

Likely - they didn't get any promising result fast enough, and kids be damned. That would explain Alder's abrupt transition into the standard orthography.
