Does anyone know why they don't keep the engine rev'ed off-throttle today to keep the MGU-H spinning? It seems like it should:

  • Generate energy by spinning the MGU-H with spare engine power.
  • Reduce energy consumption by keeping the turbo spun up while using less energy deployment.
  • Turn off-throttle "wasted" engine power into increased peak power on-throttle through energy deployment.

The only explanation I can think of is that they can exceed the per-lap energy deployment limits specified in the rules without doing this so there's no point. In which case I guess what's bringing this back in 2026 is increased per-lap deployment limits.

I think you’re right with the reason you provided. Spending fuel to keep the MGU-H generating power wastes fuel if the energy can’t be used.
