You must have sensitive ears. 12 gauage shotguns are loud but not terrible with zero hearing protection. This is sitting on the sheet range with 10 people blasting rounds for a few hours.
One or two shots defending your home isn't going to blow out your ears. Edge cases would be holding a gun close to your ear, which isn't common. I'm not judging anyone throwing a suppressor on their gun, do what you want. But I'm just saying, you're not going to be sneaking around firing off silent shots in the middle of a party. People will know what you're doing.
You are either a deaf idiot, or know nothing about guns.
Unless you live in some fucking mega mansion where every room of your house is larger than a normal persons entire home, the overpressure and noise from shooting in a confined spot is absolutely cause for concern, and will absolutely cause hearing damage, and possibly even concussive brain injury.
Hopping on the dogpile, he's objectively wrong, says Science™. A "safe" rating is 70 dB, prolonged exposure to 85 dB causes damage, 120 dB "may cause discomfort" and 140 dB is considered the threshold for pain.
Shotguns average 150-156 dB, rifles 155-163 dB, and handguns can spike as high as 164.5 dB. He's claiming he shoots shotguns without ear pro on a line with others and he's fine, not happening (or: deaf.) What's more, there's no fucking way he's at any sort of range on the line without ears and eyes unless it's in his buddy Jimmy's back yard, even if he's deaf the range doesn't care you still have to follow the rules. His story is a complete fabrication and his "experience" is as well.

Believe what you want. If you think you lose your hearing from firing one shot at an invader coming into your living room, then you're delusional.
