Mine in Minnesota was the same way. They have to verify that you can comptently use a firearm before they give you the concealed carry permit.
Honestly I'd prefer that sorta. Here you get your CC without ever touching a gun, but when I first shot pistols and rifles it was nothing like I expected.
I also quickly learned I'm a terrible aim, so in self defense would likely need to go with a shotgun or something...
Yeah, for our class, we had to get a minimum number of shots on the target at 10 yards if I'm remembering correctly.
In self defense pulling out a gun and shooting towards the direction of an assailant should be more than enough to give you GTFO-time.
