Did it ever? The whole “effort guarantees success” is just propaganda to keep the masses docile and industrious. It was always a lie.
Of course, they got greedy, as they always do, and now everyone can see through the lie.
It did, yes. At one point you could own a home and support an entire family on the wages of a single unskilled laborer.
