Wow...I'm actually a little in shock.
Obviously I didn't like the guy. And I know my profile picture is ironic in this case, but it's just like...I haven't seem this happen in a while. Much less have I seen an attempt succeed.

Yup. As for school shootings, another one already happened (forgot which city). Just seems like daily life in the US.
I haven't checked the actual statistics for a while, but it looks like there was 350 in 2023 - so yes, it is daily life. For the past 10 years in the US it just feels like I see that there was either a public shooting or a school shooting almost every day. It never ends.
As for the day Kirk got shot, the school shooting was not far away in Colorado.

Yes, bit they were state politicians. I'm not saying it's unheard of, it's just that usually nationally recognized figures either have enough security or enough luck to get by. I mean, trump survived 3 attempts so far, two of which actually managing to get shots off?
I can't say I'm surprised in the context of other events. Like the health insurance CEO who got whacked. When that happened, people were kinda like "yeah, that makes sense, given the way healthcare is." It showed people are not as shy of political violence as they might have been in some times past. Between that and signs the US could be heading toward another civil war of some kind, if anything, I'm surprised it's taking this long to escalate. Not saying I want chaotic violence, but well, it already kind of is a country of chaotic violence. The US is a goddamn mess and a lot of people are just sort of putting up with it or finding ways to blame themselves or each other as individuals rather than the system. Even people who don't believe in bootstraps mentality on paper still sometimes act like they believe in it and like all problems are solved through personal striving; they'll give lip service to systemic issues and then turn around and individualize the solutions. Nobody with power and broad influence is actually promising real, meaningful change, much less following through on promises, so it's deteriorating more so into violence. Obama era was probably the last time the promises were there along with political victory, but then he didn't follow through and was just eight years of aesthetics and scraps of reform tweaks. Sanders tried to do the promise of better thing, but couldn't pull off a win.
So that's where things are.
