The Moomins is a franchise created by finnish author/illustrator Tove Jansson. It features a vast amount of comics, TV series, movies, books and games, telling various stories mostly set in moominvalley.

1st winter?
He feels old, for it to be his first winter. Maybe seasons are different where they live, however the fact that water can freeze seems altogether alien to him, so that wouldn't really explain it either.
I belive moomins normally hibernate, however in this case maybe climate change made the weather change sooner than expected 😉
