The actually smart ones knew that celebrating the death of anyone publicly as a teacher is both unprofessional and probably unethical, and kept everything to themselves. This is very much a case of expected consequences.

Teachers are a special category of public figure, and are expected to at least keep an appearance of decorum. This diminishes somewhat after 12th grade when attendance is no longer legally required, but even in University it doesn't go away completely.
