The only argument I ever have in these discussions is that if you have to spell it differently to get the pronunciation "correct", maybe it's not a very solid stance?

That argument doesn't hold much weight in English. Plus they were riffing on Jif, it wouldn't make sense to use the exact spelling. More importantly it's an acronym.

It does hold water for this word, since everyone pronounces the word "gift" with a hard g. Taking a consonant from the end of the word wouldn't change how the first letter is pronounced.
