Something about that hit me so hard when I first played through Spec Ops when I was younger. Went from "Oh, hey, that's cute, they acknowledge the player" to "I am a terrible person, I could have ended this at any point. I was always in control."

Except you really couldn't. I liked the game until I tried to replay it to make different choices, and realized you are literally on rails. Your options are be a terrible person or lay down and die.

Yes, the one big criticism I have for this game: the developers said you could have always stopped and left, but just putting down a game is unsatisfying after paying for it. They should have a secret ending if you turned around in the beginning. That would have made their point.
