My E39's cup holders are completely useless. Apparently in Europe, it isn't common to have a drink while you're driving

It isn't common. As a driver you can be fined for distracting actions like eating or drinking while driving.

Yeah, why would I, I'm driving. If I want a drink I'll pause doing that. It probably because we don't have a lot of those "500km, then turn left" road trips.

We don't drink soders and it's frowned upon to drink beer while driving.

You need a French van then, they're made to have a bottle of wine in easy reach of the driver whenever he needs it!
