Another advantage of having your own domain for email is that you can just pack your shit and move to greener pastures when your current email provider turns to shit. No need to change your email everywhere.
I still keep my Hotmail/Yahoo/etc., but I've gotten my name as a domain and use that for professional communication.
It has catch-all support, so whether you send an email to hi@name.com or "XxX_360noscopegamer_xXx@name.com", I still receive it.
