I'm planning to buy Smart TVs for my house and I wanted to know which TV OS has better support for homelab media apps.

Self-Hosted apps:

  • Jellyfin
  • Immich
  • Nextcloud Memories
  • Funkwhale or Navidrome or Mopidy
  • AudioBookShelf

Non-selfhosted apps I use:

  • Steam Link
  • All Streaming apps (Netflix, Disney+, etc.)
  • YouTube, YT Kids
  • YouTube Music
  • Spotify
  • Audible

Presumably Roku spies on you too? Better to installato one of those linux based OSes that you can even install on a Pi

For sure, but if someone is considering a smartTV I’m presuming they are looking for simplicity. And while Roku does probably spy at least their shit works, I want to break my LG WebOS tv on a daily basis, I’ll never buy another smartTV

Edit: also unless something has changed you can’t flash anything onto Samsung or LG tvs if that’s what you meant. If I’m wrong tell me and I’ll have a project to complete today

I believe trilobite@lemdro.id meant a mini-pc to flash a type of AndroidTV like Linux OS on it.
Like a Raspi 0 with IR remote and a tv OS.
