Nah port forwarding is required on at least one end to make connections with peers. You can download files without it provided the seeders have PF setup but you won't be able to seed anything, which breaks the fundamentals of P2P. This will also get you banned from private trackers if you're not seeding. With a VPN the forwarded port is through them not on your router so security isn't really an issue here.

Not that I would ever pirate anything! That would be immoral to steal a tiny infinitesimal amount money from billionaires
