2. Be civil
- Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
- Do not harrass or attack members of the community for any reason.
- Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
- Bigotry will not be tolerated.
- These rules are somewhat loosened when the subject is a public figure. Still, do not attack their person or incite harrassment.
3. Post Linux-related content
- Including Unix and BSD.
- Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of
sudo
in Windows.
- No porn. Even if you watch it on a Linux machine.
4. No recent reposts

MODERATORS
Are you suggesting that the original meme's depiction of software shipped in a tarball being a retarded way of doing it, is actually serious, rather than hyperbolic?
There is nothing wrong with using a downloaded file to install software. What the OP on reddit was trying to do is depict this method as retarded. For me, installing packages thorugh a GUI is retarded, but I didn't make a similar meme that depicts the opposite.
You want to install things through a GUI, fine, that's your choice. Just don't say that using a downloaded file and using the terminal to do the same is retarded.
Flatpacks/Snaps/AppImages are retarded for me as well, especially since you can compile most things to run natively, but I don't bitch about it. People use them, and that's fine, it's their choice.
Of course there isn't. Look up the definition of hyperbole.
If you had made a meme depicting the opposite, it would have gone over better because then it could at least be interpreted as a sarcastic jab at the type of gatekeepers that give the linux community a bad name.
The original meme isn't "bitching about it", it's poking fun at the type of tunnel visioned elitists that exist among linux users who genuinely think that everyone knowing how to use the terminal is a reasonable ask. As if accessible GUIs are a threat to those us who know how to make use of CLI applications.
That you admit that you DO think the "other" side of this conversation is retarded, is telling, because it shows you see a divide where there shouldn't be one.
No one said you'd have to be a wiz and write bash scripts left and right, but installing a package you've downloaded through the terminal ๐คจ... I mean, come on, it's basically one freaking command, it really isn't that hard.
It's not a divide if I don't make fun of those people or belittle them. I don't. Everyone has their choice and what works for them, and that's fine. Just don't make the other parties that feel more comfortable with the terminal look retarded because we choose to do things differently than you.
Of course it is! Just because you and I get it, doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be made easier. My mom can't even remember how to find and install an app on Android. Normies cannot be expected to wrap their heads around the mere concept of the terminal. Ever.
Then what exactly is this post?
They, not you. I'm on arch, but that didn't stop me from installing VanillaOS for my sister to use on her laptop.
I agree with you up to a point, but not all the way. Write her the template for the command on a piece of paper, and trust me, after a few attempts, she will get it right.
And even if she can't get it right, that's OK, it's not a problem, that's why GUI installers exist. I may not get why she can't learn a simple command, but that's OK, I also don't understand a lot of other things, which doesn't mean they don't or shouldn't exist.
Hey, I didn't start it ๐คท. I don't start to poke, but I will poke back if I'm being poked.
There is so much more to understanding the terminal, than memorizing a command. For one, you'll have to want to learn.
And I wouldn't be giving my mother ANY commands on paper notes until I'm sure she understands what a root user is and why she shouldn't "sudo" everything since "that's what makes
apt install
work".If she really needed to use some CLI application, I'd write a bash script for her to double click.
You do not give a noob user free reign over an install you don't want to come back and repair.
If you agree that ease of use has a case, then the meme wasn't even poking fun at you, it's poking fun at the people who vehemently believe the terminal is the first and last tool anyone should use.
You took a meme seriously, and started a fight with strangers.
No, I believe it just pokes fun at people that would rather use it than not use it, even though there are other options.
I won't comment on the rest, I just have a different take on it.
Nope, that's what the OP on reddit did. Why poke fun at people for wanting to use the terminal? Isn't that what memes essentially are, making fun of something?
You are dead set on being offended, huh?
I am not dead set, that is what happened when the OP on reddit posted this meme.
OK, let's step back for a moment and say that, OK, it's not retarded, maybe the meme depicts these people as stupid... or gullible... or just doing things not in corelation with what we have in the 21st century... why would you do that ๐คจ. I could make up a 100 memes about people not knowing anything beyond Snaps and Flatpaks (not only that, but using a GUI to install them), when there is clearly a more, not only native, but also optimal, way of doing it, but I don't. Why? Because I believe that that's a personal choice. You don't wanna bother with terminal commands, that's fine, use whatever UI you like to install packages/Snaps/Flatpaks on your sustem, I have no objection. But calling the default way of doing just about anything on a UNIX based OS stupid, out of date, out of touch with reality, or whatever... excuse me, but you're the one that's stupid. It's like saying "you know what, we have MCUs now and pretty much any protocol works with any other, they all have translations in software/firmware, voltage levels don't really matter, 3.3V is interpetted as a 1, even though this thing needs 5V, so... yeah, you don't need to know much more than that about electronics, just buy a bunch of modules, mash them together, it should work, and hey, if it doesn't, tough luck, mash them up in a different way, you'll eventually find the right patch that works ๐ ๐" is OK as a POV when teaching new engineers about electronics basics.
You wanna learn something? You start from the ground up. You wanna use a GUI for installing apps on Linux? Fine, but don't for one second think you're smarter than thousands of users and devs that have used Linux for more than 30 years.
You are really salty about this for someone who claims they don't care.
No-one is lording their superiority over you. You just have an inferiority complex because the majority has decided to prioritise different things from what you would choose. And when someone takes shots at people who think "their" idea of optimal is the one true solution, it hits a bit close to home.
Again, stop saying you, I'm right there with you at the terminal, I'm just not dumb enough to think we can or should bring everyone else up here.
And why the fuck would I think those users having the OS hold their hands are the smart ones? The whole point is that dumb people should get to use computers, too.
I don't care as long as the other party doesn't care as well.
It litelarly is more optimal... faster, better... fuck, I'm not gonna quote Daft Punk ๐.
Not trying to bring them over to the dark side. Just don't say it's "drrrr ๐คช" when you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.
They should, I completely agree... but they should know their place, just like I know mine. I don't pretend I'm a dev just because I wrote a few stupid apps and open a few PRs here and there. I'm a geek, that's all.
I'm starting to think you are exactly the elitist gatekeeper the original meme was aimed at.
Close to home? More like bullseye.
You're even defending your optimal as if your circumstance were the only one that counts.
But it literaly IS more optimal... how hard is that to grasp.
My point was, do whatever you want, just don't make fun of those that actually do stuff the way they were intended to be done in the first place. Use a GUI, hell use an AI for all I care, it's your computer, not mine ๐คท.
Not if you're incapable of learning it... A hammer is optimal for a nail, doesn't mean you should use it as a saw. How hard is that to grasp?
And my point is, you're a snowflake who can't take a joke. The original meme can be interpreted hurtfully, but you have to choose to do so by giving it way more weight than you ever should a meme.
Well, I know one thing, I'm a lot less of a snowflake than a lot of people here are.
Yeah, all-in-all, your contributions are great. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be told off for getting vindictive.
And if you wanted to take a swing at me, something like "at least I'm not a care-bear" would have worked better.
Shit... I just realized I was talking to a mod that maintains half the Fediverse ๐.
Yeah, that is a good comeback ๐. I'm not that good EQ wise to be honest, but I try ๐.
