when I asked this question a long time ago I was told that if you jumped in feet first, when the tanks hit the water they get shoved up into the back of your head pretty hard.
We have things that hold the tank to the bcd now, even when doing a giant step entry.
It's also pretty hard to balance and you can topple ass over head pretty easily.
Safer, easier etc to just sit on the boat, do a final look over of your equipment and drop backwards
More so your mask and any gadgets on your vest can get knocked off, rolling back is the smoothest entry into the water.
They teach holding mask and reg in one hand and hug gadgets with the other for stride entry.
Right…cause your shit might get knocked off by the water, rolling back is the most gentle way to get in
