It's referring to phone operation. Drivers are mandated to use a hands-free system like a headset or car speaker.

This is an old picture, right?

[-] AGD4@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

That's what I was wondering, and hoping. Otherwise what state (or province?) isn't already enforcing distracted driving rules?

I-464 is entirely in Virginia (I don't know what the of shields mean to look them up.

Virginia brought in hands free 1 Jan 2021, so this photo could be 31 Dec 2020, but I don't think Virginia is warm enough to dress like that in Jan.

Edit: there are a fucking lot of states without hands free laws - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restrictions_on_cell_phone_use_while_driving_in_the_United_States

Interesting! Though on closer inspection that sign appears to be interstate 494, which is based out of Minnesota. Wikipedia says their hands-free traffic law took effect on August 1st 2019. That time of year, quality of photo, and car models seem to line up with that image.

Seems I can't keep my 69 straight

[-] jaybone@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Edit: I see a 494 near a 62 in Minnesota. Don’t see a 24 there though.

Thats cause the top one is a 26. We also have a nasty habit of changing named roads to numbered if looking at it from gmaps.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

lol I was correcting the other guy for getting 494 wrong. Now I also made a booboo :(

Seriously, Montana? Texting while driving is A-OK?

[-] Restaldt@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

What are they going to hit?

100 miles of grass in any direction?

[-] Drusas@kbin.run 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Having driven through Montana, I'm going to say either a river or a cow.

[-] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

It was a weird time. Everyone made a big deal out of having to hold their phone while driving but hands-free was a readily available alternative.
