Too real.

I was traveling back into the US by car after vacationing with family in Mexico. I was arrested at the border by the US CBP. Almost a dozen officers pointing their guns at my car. They handcuffed me and took me to a detention center. A big room with a metal bench lining the while. My ankle was shackled to the bench. They held me there for 4 hours. Had to use the bathroom with cameras on me. The room filled up with a couple dozen people. There was a 12 year old kid next to me, also shackled to the bench. There were mothers with babies. The USCBP officers cracked jokes like "welcome to the party" in reference to the large number of people in the room. I was terrified because they told me nothing and I had no idea how long they were going to keep me there. At one point they talked about moving people to another detention center, and I was worried I would be one of those people. The rest of my family had entered the US already and had no idea I had been arrested, they thought I was on my way home.

I filed a redress with US DHS. The response I got back was that they couldn't tell me why I was arrested. Reached out to my US representatives, response was basically that US CBP has "wide latitude" to do what they want.

It's amazing that we as a people, armed to the teeth we are, meekly submit to such tyranny

Not dogging on you personally. I am dogging on all of us in general. We should've overthrown the government long, long ago.

This is one of many reasons why I got off of opiates. I spent a lot of time worrying about saying/ doing the wrong thing and winding up in jail. Then I’d detox in jail.

About 5 months after I got off of opiates I recorded some police officers arresting a man. At one point like 4 officers had this man on the ground and one officer started punching him. I started shouting at the officers that they had the man on his stomach. They didn’t have to punch him.

One of the officers approached me and told me to leave. I can’t begin to tell you how good it felt to tell him that I didn’t have to leave and wasn’t going to leave. I was fully prepared to go to jail over speaking up for a man I never met.

It’s a god damn shame the amount of freedom we as a society have given up for a false sense of safety.

I was actually jailed a few years ago for standing up to police who were accosting and allowing others to beat down a young girl. I was literally arrested for telling them they can't do that and arguing with one of the piggies about it. He wasn't too happy about having his behavior challenged.

I would have to make a separate thread talking about what went down that day. I remember it all clearly, and feel so sorry for that poor girl to this day.

Fuck the police.

Yeah, the whole system in America is fucked. Like, the punishment should be that you get removed from society. You lose your freedom. But we live in such a hellscape that somehow we’ve normalized treating people worse than we would treat any animal.

My friend and I were talking the other day about people saying “don’t drop the soap”. Your friend is going to prison you tell him “don’t drop the soap”. A son goes to prison and dad says “don’t drop the soap”. The person saying that is essentially saying “I hope you don’t get raped”, and somehow that’s normal.

Americans have got to rethink our punishment system.

[-] pinkdrunkenelephants@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I don't think it's anything to do with punishment, but the possibility the state can just disappear you.

And not allowing the state to do anything about evil people, which is what this old broken system decided was okay, causes an even worse kind of tyranny, the kind inflicted upon you by the people around you -- in rampant abuse, mass rape, racism and genocide.

We need to come up not only with a new system of government, but a new culture.

[-] MuhammadJesusGaySex@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I mean I agree with that. This is kind of relevant to what we’re talking about. But, I hate when I see a cool thing in Japan. Because, every time I see some art installations or some cool museum thing. The first thing I think is “That would never work in America. The people here are so rude, and trashy that they’d destroy it on the first day.”

It makes me kinda sad that we don’t have enough pride in our society to want to improve it, and keep things clean and functional. To try for a better way.

[-] Isoprenoid@programming.dev 4 points 1 year ago

As an outsider, I've never understood this reasoning.

Do American citizens really believe they can overthrow (or even coerce) their government by force? The US has the largest, most mobile armed force in the world, and has much more access to intel.

How would a band of citizens even come close to competing with that?

[-] pinkdrunkenelephants@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yes, actually. We're the ones who run most of the infrastructure, including the military, and military personnel have already stated emphatically they refuse to fire on U.S. citizens on U.S. soil even if ordered to.

Millions of us are veterans and know how to operate military equipment we can just rip off from National Guard armories.

Millions of us could just go on strike, en masse, Gandhi style today and grind the economy to a halt long enough to force TPTB to surrender.

It wouldn't be difficult.

Our hurdle is us.

And TPTB knows this, and they play that card like a cheat hand in a poker tournament because it's all they really need.

[-] Isoprenoid@programming.dev 1 points 1 year ago

It wouldn’t be difficult. Our hurdle is us.

This is exactly my point. Do American citizens have the capacity to overthrow / coerce their government by force?

Your answer is effectively: no. Thank you.

That's what I am here for. To help break the propaganda subjugating everyone else's minds so we can.

[-] bleistift2@feddit.de 62 points 1 year ago

Everybody has something to hide. That you don’t know what it is you should be hiding doesn’t make it disappear.

[-] GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.dbzer0.com 32 points 1 year ago

People don't think of innocuous, private, tech-facilitated conversations with loved ones as things to hide. That is, until they're receiving advertisements for caskets after papi kicks it.

[-] GladiusB@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Wait until the cherry pick it. EVERYONE can be criticized if you look deep enough and can gaslight. It's messed up that it has come that.

[-] positiveWHAT@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

What? That I have a bum rash? That I watch hentai? That I vote Green Party? That my Credit Card is ...

[-] JayDee@lemmy.ml 28 points 1 year ago

Actually, yes to voting the green party. When authoritarian collectives gain power in a state, there is no question that companies will cooperate with them to stay open.

All that seemingly innocuous information can all of a sudden land you behind bars when it gets handed over to a government that is staunchly against it. LGBT folks in other countries, and women in anti-abortion states come to mind.

[-] Chariotwheel@kbin.social 18 points 1 year ago

Yeah, a reminder that the Weimar Republic, genuinely innocently catalogued the German population with all kinds of information. Too bad that the democratic powers didn't stay in power and the Nazis had access to all the information including who and where Jewish Germans were.

This is btw the reason why you don't have "race" as a category in our census. The government actively doesn't want to know that thanks to the historical baggage.

[-] pinkdrunkenelephants@sopuli.xyz -2 points 1 year ago

This is why we really need to rethink the value of having any state at all. States need those tools and information to best serve its constituents, yet when it gets it, sociopaths immediately take it over and use it for evil ends.

Our problem isn't really a governmental one, it's an evolutionary one, but because of it it's impossible to have any kind of a functional government.

Maybe we ought to have a general AI run everything.

[-] Num10ck@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

AI could just be a curtain for human actors, without accountability.

[-] pinkdrunkenelephants@sopuli.xyz -1 points 1 year ago

This is true.

So we're left with the original question: what system can we build that's sociopath proof, and if we truly can't, when do we get rid of the sociopaths?

Because we can't continue allowing them to dominate us.

[-] positiveWHAT@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Seems like the bigger problem is people voting in fucking science denying nazis to power.
Shortsighted scientifically illiterate people with voting rights is the bane of civilization.

[-] JayDee@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

I would agree, the lack of humanitarian and scientific education consistently bites our societies in the ass, though I've also heard plenty of pragmatic individuals throw up their hands and advocate for authoritarians before.

The big problem is that an authoritarian being voted in is always a looming threat, so it's best to avoid even the chance of such information getting into their hands.

And you do that by not gathering data on your users and making the data you do store encrypted such that not even you can decrypt it. No back doors.

Yup, when ever someone says that, ask to search through their underwear drawer. I guarantee they'll do a quick 180.

[-] SaakoPaahtaa@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Oh no please not the underwear
